Yoga and us
The United Nations passed a resolution in 2014 declaring 21st June as a "World Yoga Day" after the petition by Indian Prime Minister highlighting the importance of Yoga.
Yoga originated as an ancient spiritual practice rooted in Indian philosophy and is now gaining global popularity. It encompasses self-disciplinary practices: physical postures known as asanas, breathing techniques called Pranayama, and meditation known as Dhyana. Studies have shown that these practices are tailored to enhance cardiorespiratory endurance, muscle strength, joint flexibility and mental health.
Numerous studies highlight yoga's benefits, particularly in chronic conditions such as arthritis, balance issues, chronic pain, and oncology ; improving functional capacity and quality of life, especially in older individuals and cancer patients. While ongoing studies continue to explore its health benefits, current evidence establishes a positive correlation between yoga and overall well-being.
Research suggests that regular yoga practice promotes mental calmness and well-being. Despite limited sample size , regular yoga practice appears effective in reducing stress by lowering the cortisol levels. By quietening the mind, yoga increases self-awareness. "Yoga Nidra," a guided meditation technique, has proven to be highly effective in calming the mind. It induces a state of relaxed consciousness, balancing between wakefulness and sleep. A consistent bedtime yoga routine can notably improve sleep quality.
The slow, deliberate movements of yoga coupled with breathing exercises increase blood flow to muscles, warming them up, while holding the poses for a while, builds strength. Older individuals benefit from the regular practice of slow and steady movements of yoga , resulting in the improved strength and balance, while children develop balance, strength, endurance, and flexibility.
Moreover, yoga reduces body-wide inflammation and enhances cell-mediated immunity, bolstering the body's ability to combat infections and improving cardiovascular health. Yoga along with cardio workout is very helpful in patients with insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and PCOS.
Yoga transcends physical & respiratory movements, along with incorporating mindfulness; benefiting both mental and physical well-being. In conclusion, yoga enhances flexibility, strength, immunity, brain function, sleep quality, and overall quality of life. It also mitigates anxiety, depression, and chronic pain, although further research is needed for definitive conclusions.
